Karen Gwyer is a London, UK producer raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Debut album 'Needs Continuum' was released in Feb 2013 through No Pain In Pop. It's a deeply personal homage to classic house and deconstructed psychedelia built on organic cyclical rhythms and tempered synth washes. Dazed and Confused called it "impressively unusual and poignant.. a uniquely dark, brooding and slow-burning masterpiece", FACT Magazine "an intimate and beautiful record", and it was released to acclaim following the birth of her son. Whereas “Needs Continuum” was a largely intimate record, “New Roof” lead tracks ‘Lay Claim To My Grub’ and ‘Missisissipippi’ are monolithic pieces; more mechanistic and weighty compositions than Gwyer’s previous work. Both vocalless 15 min+ tracks are built from a tough analogue-techno template, with Gwyer’s distinctive impressionistic synthstrokes sitting above the pulsing rhythms. ‘Nail Bars Of The Apocalypse’ is the ambient break between the two, a coo-ing necessity of an interlude. Much like Gwyer herself, it’s borne from a place within listening distance of Detroit, the Midwest noise scene, and NYC’s avant-house heyday.
